This course provides an overview of nonprofit organization management in today’s dynamic social and economic environments. It examines strategic planning for nonprofit entities and the role of leadership and governance in advancing an organization’s mission and long-term impact. The course defines nonprofit management and social value creation, and it describes how effective management practices, community engagement, and mission-driven employees can be core competencies for nonprofit organizations. Strategic challenges will be discussed regarding resource constraints, donor and stakeholder accountability, regulatory and legal compliance, and the complexities of managing volunteers and diverse program portfolios. Additional topics include fundraising strategies, ethical considerations, community partnerships, and evaluating program effectiveness. Furthermore, the development and use of nonprofit performance metrics are explored, along with specific strategic management tools such as logic models, theory of change, balanced scorecards for nonprofits, cost-benefit analysis, return on mission (ROM), and organizational audits. Emphasis is placed on how these tools support effective decision-making, strengthen organizational sustainability, and enhance mission-driven outcomes.
